Import DXF Cut Files
Damien Von Sincler2025-04-25T17:00:50-07:00Let’s discuss the basics of importing a DXF file, shape, or project into the Optimum CNC plasma software.
Upon opening the Optimum CNC software, click on the “CAM” button in the top navigation. The “Import” button is found within the CAM section of the software that allows you to import a DXF file from your computer. This will bring up the following screen.

Here, we’re primarily interested in the 3 major ways to import a file or shape into Optimum CNC. To start off, it’s useful to simply go over the basics of importing an already existing DXF file.
For that, click the Import button. Once clicked, the Import tab will be available with an import folder and an import DXF file list. Choose a folder that contains some DXF files by clicking on the button provided. After clicking the button, a file picker will appear, allowing you to select a folder and click the Open button.
As you can see, the name of this folder has changed, and we can select the available files within it. Let’s say I will add this file here—the file preview is available down below. I will select the default file dimensions, which include the units (inches or millimeters) and the scale of the file. For instance, if I’d like to scale it from its default width and height, I can enter 2.0 here, or if I’d like to make it smaller, I would enter 0.5, etc. Here, I’ll leave it as is at the default scale or width and height and simply click the Add to Nest button.
We have this compass file available for import. Let’s say I’d also like to add this sea turtle file. I’ll scale it up a little—1.2, for instance—and add it to the nest. Now that we’ve added it to the nest, it appears next to the previously added file.
This covers the process of importing existing DXF files that you may have edited on your computer using some other third-party program. However, Optimum CNC also allows you to import some 70 plus shapes that are built into the software by clicking the Shapes button in the top ribbon. These range from simple shapes such as rectangles and circles to much more complex shapes.
Select a shape and edit all of the parameters within it until you’re satisfied. Let’s say I will select a shape—for instance, the star. I will choose some number of corners, perhaps four, and some external radius. Once I’m satisfied with the shape, the preview of which is available in the corner right here, I will click the Add to Nest button.
Now we have 2 files that we have created in a third-party program and some file that is available from within the Shapes library. We can add any number of such files until we have filled out this project.
Next, what is the Project button? The Project button is a project just like this. For instance, you have perhaps 5, 10 or 20 files that you have previously added to Optimum CNC software and saved. Let’s say here we’ll clear this current project and open some previously existing project—for instance, this one right here. This allows us to quickly save and then load a project into Optimum CNC for later use.

Current Folder Selection: The file picker will open and the user can select the folder on their PC to import the DXF files from (similar to the Project option above, however the goal is to select a folder rather than a .ucad file)
Import DXF File Select: The Import DXF File Select area displays all the available files that can be imported from within the chosen folder.
File Preview: A simple file visualization to use prior to importing the file into the CAM editor.
Dimensions: When adding a DXF file, its scale/size can be changed. This is done by selecting either the Scale or the Size of the file being imported. On the next page is an example of two files imported with different size/scale settings (1 and 2 for Scale=1 and Scale=2 respectively).
NOTE: The user can also select whether the dimensions of the DXF file (which is typically unitless when created in a program such as Inkscape, etc) are to be considered to be inches or mm by default. Note that in situations where a file needs to be scaled up/down by a factor of 25.4 (to convert from mm to inches or vice versa) it is considered best practice to do so in the Dimensions window before clicking the Add to Nest button, rather than to manually scale it after the file is already imported into the CAM module. The reason for this is due to the fact that on files that are scaled incorrectly (usually too small), fine lines and details may sometimes be lost upon import. In such a scenario, increasing the size of the file by 25.4 times after it has already been imported will not result in an increase in detail. For instance, if you are aware that a DXF file that is set to 15mm by 15mm should actually be 15” by 15”, it is best to toggle the units toggle or to scale it before Adding to Nest, rather than using the Scale button in the top ribbon. After the necessary dimensions and scaling adjustments have been performed, the file can be imported into the editor using the “Add to Nest” button. Alternatively, the user can close the Import tab to cancel the import.
